Over the Bealach na Ba, a west coast site next door to the Applecross Inn
Applecross Campsite sits on the remote Applecross peninsula in Wester Ross, reached either over the Bealach na Ba — the highest and most dramatic road pass in Britain, climbing to 626 metres in a series of hairpins — or on the longer coast road from Shieldaig. Either way, arriving feels like an achievement. The site occupies sheltered ground a short walk from the village and the shore of the Inner Sound, with views across the water towards Raasay and Skye.
Pitches are a mix of grass with and without electric hook-up and hardstanding with hook-up and water, taking tents, campervans, caravans and motorhomes. There are also a few camping cabins for anyone travelling without kit. Facilities include a heated shower and toilet block with hot water, a laundry room with washing machine and tumble dryer, and a children's playground. Dogs are welcome. Note that the Bealach na Ba is not suitable for large caravans, and the coast road is the safer approach for anything sizeable.
The Applecross Inn is next door and is the reason a good number of people make the journey at all: langoustines, scallops and crab landed locally, plus a takeaway fish and chip window in summer. The campsite has its own food offering on site during the season. Beyond eating, this is a place for sea kayaking, walking the coastal paths, watching for otters and seals, and doing very little. Prices start at roughly £15 to £20 per person per night depending on pitch type and season. The site opens from spring to autumn and is a fixture on the North Coast 500, so booking is strongly advised in high summer.
