East Peak Campsite

South Yorkshire

Hilltop moorland camping around 12 miles from Sheffield, on the Peak District's edge

About East Peak Campsite

East Peak Campsite sits on high ground near Silkstone, on the northern fringe of the Peak District around twelve miles from Sheffield city centre, and makes the most of its position with wide views across open moorland and farmland from most pitches. It is a working smallholding turned campsite, with a relaxed, informal feel and a mix of grass pitches for tents alongside space for touring caravans and motorhomes.

The site's elevated position means it catches the wind and any passing weather more than valley sites nearby, so a sturdy tent and warm sleeping bag are worth bringing even in summer, but the payoff is some of the clearest night skies within easy reach of Sheffield and Barnsley, with little light pollution to spoil the stars. Facilities are straightforward rather than luxurious, running to showers, electric hook-up on a number of pitches and a small on-site shop for essentials, which suits campers after a simple, unfussy base rather than a resort-style stay.

Dogs are welcome throughout the site, and the surrounding footpaths give immediate access to walking across the South Yorkshire and Peak District boundary without needing to drive anywhere first. It works well as a base for exploring both Sheffield and Barnsley, or for a straightforward night or two en route further into the Peak District, and its year-round popularity with walkers means booking ahead is sensible for weekends.
