The Prince Rupert takes its name from the Royalist commander who is said to have used the building as his headquarters during the Civil War, and its oldest sections, including a genuinely medieval great hall, still stand among the narrow lanes just off Fish Street. Bedrooms are spread across several connected buildings of varying ages, giving a good deal of variation in size, ceiling height and views over the surrounding rooftops.

Its position places guests within the town's densest concentration of timber-framed buildings and narrow shuts, with the castle, museum and main shopping streets all within a five-minute walk.
