Penmaenuchaf stands on a wooded slope above the Mawddach estuary near Dolgellau, with Cadair Idris rising behind it. The stone-fronted Victorian house was bought in 2022 by Zoe and Neil Kedward of the Seren group, who have been steadily working through the building — rooms, restaurant, bar and lounges — while keeping the original character intact. The result is a country house hotel that feels updated rather than gutted.

The bedrooms are individually done and vary in size and outlook, with the best of them looking straight down the estuary. Expect proper beds, good linen, and bathrooms that have been brought up to current standards. The house has retained its panelling, fireplaces and window seats, and the lounges are set up for reading and sitting rather than passing through. Gardens run to several acres and there are fishing rights on the Mawddach.

Food is a serious part of the offer. Head chef Dan Andree builds menus around ingredients sourced as locally as possible, with a set dinner menu and a shorter bar option. Breakfast is cooked to order and included. The bar keeps a decent list of Welsh beers and spirits alongside the wine.

This is a good base for the southern part of the national park, which is quieter than the Snowdon end. The Mawddach Trail runs along the estuary from Dolgellau to Barmouth and is flat enough for anyone; the Pony Path up Cadair Idris starts a short drive away; and Barmouth's beach is fifteen minutes by car. It suits walkers who want somewhere comfortable to come back to, and couples looking for a food-led weekend without the formality of a five-star hotel.
