About Sygun Fawr Country House

Sygun Fawr is a former Welsh manor house dating from 1644, standing in 22 acres of gardens and open mountainside a short walk from Beddgelert. It has been run as a guest house and small hotel for close to seventy years, and is currently in the hands of Jay Beers and Jane Sherratt, who live on site and run it themselves.

The rooms are in the old house and keep its character — thick stone walls, small windows, beams and sloping floors. They are comfortable and warm rather than large or luxurious, and most look out over the valley or up towards the surrounding hills. All are en suite. Downstairs there is a lounge with an inglenook fire, a small bar, and a dining room. Gardens run up the hillside behind the house and are worth an hour on their own.

Jay is a classically trained chef and the food gets consistent praise from guests. Breakfast is substantial and cooked to order, and dinner is available on most nights with a short menu that changes regularly. The bar is well stocked for a house this size and is a sensible place to spend an evening after a day on the hill.

Beddgelert is one of the prettiest villages in Eryri and sits at the meeting of the Glaslyn and Colwyn rivers. The Watkin Path up Snowdon starts a few minutes' drive away, Sygun Copper Mine is next door, and the Welsh Highland Railway stops in the village. Aberglaslyn Pass and the walk through it along the old trackbed are on the doorstep. This suits couples and walkers who want somewhere personal and quiet with genuinely good food, and it is a poor fit for anyone wanting hotel-scale facilities.
