The Comet takes its name and its art deco design from the de Havilland Comet aircraft built nearby, and the building itself began life as a 1930s roadhouse before its recent multi-million-pound refurbishment. It sits on the old St Albans Road on the western side of Hatfield, about five miles east of St Albans city centre.

Inside, the hotel leans into its period design with mid-century styling through its bedrooms, bar and restaurant, giving it a more distinctive feel than most hotels of its size in the area. Rooms and suites are arranged around the original building and later extensions, with a restaurant and bar serving food throughout the day.

Its location makes it a practical base for visiting both St Albans and Hatfield House, and it sits close to the A1(M) and the University of Hertfordshire campus, with Hatfield rail station a short walk away for onward connections into London King's Cross.
