Rufflets sits on the Strathkinness Low Road, a couple of minutes' drive west of St Andrews, in ten acres of formal and kitchen gardens that have been developed since the house was built in the 1920s. The setting is the main draw: lawns, herbaceous borders, a walled kitchen garden and mature trees, all of it a world away from the bustle of the three streets, yet close enough to reach the town in a short drive or a decent walk.

Rooms are divided between the main house, where the character and the garden views are strongest, and the lodge and courtyard accommodation, which tends to be better value and works well for families. The style is comfortable country house rather than boutique, with a good deal of the original detailing intact in the public rooms.

The Rufflets Brasserie serves from midday through to the evening, with a menu built around seasonal Scottish produce and a good proportion of the vegetables, herbs and soft fruit coming from the kitchen gardens a few yards away. Afternoon tea is served daily and Sunday lunch in the more formal dining room is a long-standing local fixture. The gardens make it a popular wedding venue, so check what is on if you want a quiet weekend.
