The Coniston sits on a working estate at Coniston Cold, a few miles north-west of Skipton on the road towards Malham. The estate covers around a thousand acres of farmland, woodland and a 24-acre private lake, and the hotel has grown steadily from a village inn into one of the larger properties in the area. It is family-owned rather than part of a chain, which shows in the way the estate activities are run alongside the hotel.

Bedrooms range from straightforward classic doubles up to deluxe rooms, lake-view rooms and family suites, with the newer wing offering the most space and the best outlook across the water. Interiors are contemporary country rather than chintz, and larger suites work well for families needing two sleeping areas. Dogs are welcome in some categories.

The Nadarra Spa is the newest addition, built around thermal experience rooms, indoor and outdoor pools, a hydrotherapy pool and a treatment list. Beyond that, the estate runs clay pigeon shooting, off-road driving, falconry, archery and fly fishing on the lake, which makes this an unusual choice for groups who want something to do beyond walking. Eating is split across a main restaurant, a bar and lounge and a more casual kitchen.

It suits families, groups of friends and anyone combining a spa break with days out, and it is a practical base for Malham Cove, Gordale Scar and Settle as well as Skipton itself. The scale means it can feel busy at weekends and it hosts a lot of weddings and conferences, so it is less suited to anyone after a quiet, small-hotel atmosphere. Midweek stays are noticeably calmer and better value.
