What visitors say
If you enjoy walking around ruins this is a lovely sight with plenty of little spaces to take a look through. If it's open I suggest having a walk through the tunnel. Only basic snacks and drinks are available to buy so take a picnic and enjoy the view.

The remains of thr Castle are wonderful, you can see some fantastic architectural details, explore an underground passage and learn more about the castles history. It's very well kept, there's benches for a picnic as well as a small shop & toilets onsite. No parking so park in the car park a short walk down the road

This is a lovely ruined castle and part of the UK heritage sites so falls under that membership. If not, price is fairly cheap at £8:50 an adult. Audio guides are free with the price with notice boards skattered around with numbers on for the guidebook. Its a nice castle with a set of stairs to climb up in the main tower and a nice underground passage way to explore.

My son and I visited the castle and found it to be excellent. The staff were friendly, cheerful and very knowledgeable. We were offered samples of the rhubarb mead which was delicious... We purchased a bottle to take home before we left. We used the audio guide during our visit and it was an excellent guide and bought the place alive as we explored. We tried to guess what each area was before listening to the guide to confirm if we were right. 😂. The ruins are interesting and it is easy to imagine where the rooms would've been in the castle as you tour. The grounds are pleasant and well kept. If you have young children with you then there is plenty of space for them to run around and burn off some energy. They will also enjoy the audio guide as it is voiced by actors and very immersive. The tunnel is amazing to walk through! The toilets are clean and well maintained. There are a few picnic benches to sit and enjoy the views and a cuppa if desired. Plenty of room for picnics on a blanket too. We used a free English Heritage family voucher for our visit (if you're using one too then take ID with the lead name on with you). There is a little souvenir shop which was well stocked with a small amount of pocket money priced items if you have children. Overall a good visit which was made better by the staff. We both highly recommend the mead. 😉
