Camping in Ashford

Ashford makes a handy base for camping in Kent, sitting right at the point where the Stour Valley meets the chalk ridges of the Kent Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. As in the rest of England, wild camping is not permitted here without the express permission of the landowner, so plan on a proper campsite, farm pitch or glamping stay rather than pitching up on the Downs themselves. Late spring through to early autumn is the best window for camping around Ashford, when the orchards are in leaf or fruiting and the Downs are at their most walkable. May and June bring wildflowers and orchids to the chalk grassland around Wye, while September and October see the surrounding countryside settle into harvest season, with local farm shops and pick-your-own fruit adding an extra reason to stay. Whatever time of year, book ahead for weekends, since Ashford's excellent rail links to London make it an easy weekend escape for city-based campers as well as a base for exploring the wider county.
