Camping in Askham Bryan

There is no official campsite in Askham Bryan itself, and as with the rest of England, wild camping is not legal without the landowner's permission, so any stay in the area needs to be at a recognised site or with a farmer or landowner's agreement. The flat, gently rolling farmland of the Vale of York around the village is well suited to touring caravan and camping sites, several of which operate within a short drive towards York, Tadcaster and the surrounding villages, offering an easy base for exploring both the city and the quieter countryside around Askham Bog and the Ouse.

Given the exposed, open nature of the Vale of York, spring through early autumn is the most comfortable season for camping here, when the ground is drier and the long summer evenings suit sitting out after a day exploring York's walls and museums. Sites in this part of North Yorkshire increasingly offer glamping options too, from pods to safari tents, which can be a good option for visitors who want the rural setting without needing their own tent or caravan, particularly outside the height of summer when the Vale of York weather can turn changeable.
