Lindisfarne Castle: A Fortress Turned Fashionable Retreat! 🌊 Ever wondered what happens when a Tudor fortress gets a 20th-century makeover? Today we explored the iconic Lindisfarne Castle on Holy Island, and its history is as dramatic as the views! A Little History Lesson: Built in the 1540s using stones from the nearby ruined Priory, it started its life as a rugged fort to protect England against Scots and Vikings. For centuries, it was a lonely outpost for soldiers battling the North Sea wind (and trust us, that wind is still there! 💨). The Changing of the Guard: The castle’s story took a glamorous turn in 1901 when Edward Hudson, the founder of Country Life magazine, bought it. He didn't want a fort; he wanted a holiday home! He hired the famous architect Sir Edwin Lutyens to transform the cold stone walls into a cozy, Arts and Crafts style masterpiece. Passing the Torch: After serving as a private retreat for the wealthy and well-connected, the castle eventually moved into the hands of the National Trust in 1944. Thanks to them, we can all wander through its quirky rooms today (and then head straight to the village for some local spirits to warm up! 🥃). It’s a place where military grit meets Edwardian elegance. Definitely a "must-see" on your British bucket list! #ExploreBritain #LindisfarneCastle #HolyIsland #NationalTrust #BritishHistory #Northumberland #CastleHunter #TravelUK

We visit Holy Island and Lindisfarne Castle every year and have noticed many changes over that time. The Castle this year has had more of the rooms, particularly the bedrooms, dressed with period items which add a lot of interest for visitors and give the building, as a whole, a more lived in appearance. From the top of the tower binoculars have been set up to view grey seals basking on the sandbanks. The garden, although detached from the Castle across the field is also well worth a visit. Sitting on one of the benches gives a good view of the rear of the Castle and is very quiet and peaceful.

Great castle and the story is told really well throughout with the signage. The chap who greeted us at the top of the castle entrance was wonderful and really welcoming. The garden is also lovely and really well cared for. Glad we are members though as entry on it's own is quite expensive for what it is.

Really enjoyed my visit here. Staff are friendly, welcoming very forthcoming with information. The history behind this castle is amazing and worth the visit. Tickets were £13 per adult but 100% worth it. There’s also a part where you get to watch the seals through a telescope.
