Camping in Blaenau Ffestiniog
7 campsites, glamping sites and caravan parks
Camping around Blaenau Ffestiniog means pitching in genuine mountain scenery, with slate-tipped peaks, disused quarries and fast-running streams on the doorstep of several small, independent sites in and around the Ffestiniog valley. As in the rest of Wales, wild camping remains illegal without the landowner's express permission, so stick to established campsites or seek permission directly if you want to camp out on the open hills — the exception is on registered common land at certain sites in Eryri (Snowdonia), which does not apply generally around this town. Most local sites are simple, small-scale affairs aimed at walkers, cyclists and mountain bikers rather than large family holiday parks, reflecting the rugged, uncommercialised character of the area. The terrain here is steep and rocky in places, a legacy of the slate industry, so pitches tend to be smaller and more sheltered than on the open coast, with some sites making use of old quarry buildings or terraces for extra shelter from the wind and rain. Given Blaenau Ffestiniog's reputation as one of the wettest towns in Wales, good waterproof kit and a sturdy tent are essential whatever the forecast, and a raised or well-drained pitch is worth prioritising. May to September offers the most reliable camping weather and the longest daylight for exploring, though the surrounding hills can turn cloudy and cool with little warning even in summer, so pack layers regardless of the season. For those who prefer a roof that doesn't depend on guy ropes, a small number of glamping pods and shepherd's huts have appeared around the town and nearby villages, offering underfloor heating or wood burners as a warmer alternative to canvas. Staying under canvas here puts you within easy striking distance of Zip World Llechwedd, the Ffestiniog Railway and some of Snowdonia's finest, least-crowded walking, including routes up into the Moelwynion and out to the abandoned quarry village of Cwmorthin — all without the queues that build up on the more famous Snowdon paths in peak season.
