Camping in Brightlingsea

There are no campsites within Brightlingsea itself, but the surrounding stretch of Essex coastline around the Colne and Blackwater estuaries has a scattering of touring and camping parks within a short drive, particularly around St Osyth, Point Clear and the Clacton area to the east. As anywhere in England, wild camping without the landowner's permission is against the law, so pitching up on the seawall, marshes or beach around Brightlingsea is not an option; stick to licensed sites, most of which welcome tents, touring caravans and motorhomes and some of which now offer glamping options such as pods, yurts or safari tents for those who want a taste of the outdoors without bringing their own kit.

The terrain here is flat, low-lying estuary and marshland rather than dramatic coastline, which makes for easy, breezy walking and good birdwatching but also means sites can be exposed to the wind coming off the Colne and Blackwater, something worth bearing in mind when choosing a pitch or booking a static option with some shelter. The ground can also turn soft after heavy rain given the proximity to tidal creeks and grazing marsh, so autumn and winter camping is best left to well-drained sites or hardstanding pitches.

Late spring through to early autumn, roughly May to September, is the most reliable window for camping here, with the longer daylight hours useful for making the most of the foot ferry to Point Clear and East Mersea, which only runs in the warmer months. Many sites in the area are within easy reach of the coast path and cycle routes along the estuary, and some are close enough to Brightlingsea itself to combine a few nights under canvas with day visits into the town for its museum, harbour and beach huts. Booking ahead for July and August is advisable, as this is peak season for the Essex coast generally and popular sites near the water fill up quickly.
