Camping in Caistor

Caistor sits right at the point where the flat Ancholme valley gives way to the folded hills of the Lincolnshire Wolds, and that changing terrain is what makes the area interesting for campers. As with anywhere else in England, wild camping on open land or farmland around Caistor is not legal without the landowner's explicit permission, so any stay needs to be on a recognised site. Fortunately the town is well served: Wolds View Country Park, an adults-only, AA five-star site just outside Caistor, offers touring pitches alongside nine well-equipped glamping pods, each with proper beds, WiFi and a television, making it an easy way to try glamping without any of the packing. Caistor Lakes Leisure Park combines touring pitches with holiday lodges and three stocked fishing lakes, appealing to anglers as much as walkers, while Walesby Woodlands Caravan Park sits right on the wooded edge of the Wolds a few miles away. The Big Sky Hideaway, a smaller glamping and camping site nearby, leans into the area's dark, open skies for a more back-to-basics stay.

The Wolds' chalk terrain drains well, which generally means firmer, drier pitches than the flatter ground further east towards the coast, though the hillier sites can be exposed to wind, so a well-pegged tent matters more here than in a sheltered valley. Spring through to early autumn is the most comfortable camping season, with April to June offering fresh countryside and long evenings for walking the Viking Way straight from your pitch, and September bringing golden hedgerows and a good chance of settled, dry weather for a final trip before winter. Given the AONB's low light pollution, clear nights around Caistor are genuinely good for stargazing, one more reason the area's glamping pods and quieter touring sites have built up a loyal following among people who would not normally camp at all.
