Thackray House occupies a hunting lodge built in 1625 for the Dukes of Perth, set within its own wooded estate on the banks of the River Teith on the edge of Callander. Long known as the Roman Camp Country House Hotel, the property was bought by the Thackray family and reopened in spring 2026 after a reported three-million-pound restoration, with period features, private fishing pools and formal gardens retained alongside newly refurbished rooms.

The estate's history stretches well beyond its 1939 conversion to a hotel: the house is known locally for having hosted The Beatles during their Scottish tour dates in the 1960s, and its chapel, walled gardens and riverside walks give guests plenty of ground to explore without leaving the grounds. Dining is centred on the Wilson Dining Room and a more informal Garden Bistro in the former potting shed, both built around Scottish produce and estate-grown ingredients.
