8 handpicked places to stay

Callander's accommodation runs from a restored seventeenth-century country house on the edge of town to simple, friendly guest houses on the streets behind Main Street, reflecting its long history as both a Highland estate town and a Victorian tourist destination. Visitors looking for a special occasion or a genuinely luxurious stay have a small number of country house hotels to choose from, set in their own grounds with award-winning restaurants attached, while those wanting a comfortable, central base without the country house price tag will find well-run three and four-star hotels right on Main Street, some of them trading under new names after recent refurbishment.

The largest part of Callander's accommodation, though, is its guest houses and bed and breakfasts, many of them in handsome Victorian villas built for the town's original tourist boom and now run by local families who know the surrounding hills and lochs well. These properties tend to offer the best value and the most personal welcome, often with home-cooked breakfasts using local produce, and several combine accommodation with a genuinely good restaurant of their own, blurring the line between guest house and dining destination.

Whichever type of stay is chosen, location within Callander makes relatively little difference given the town's compact size; a bed on Main Street is a five-minute walk from one on the quieter streets toward the river or the edge of town. The bigger decision is usually between staying in Callander itself, with its shops, pubs and easy access to Loch Katrine and Ben Ledi, or basing further out in one of the smaller settlements nearby, such as Balquhidder or Strathyre, for a quieter and more remote base among the hills.
