Camping in Carnforth
11 campsites, glamping sites and caravan parks
Carnforth and the surrounding Arnside and Silverdale National Landscape offer some quietly rewarding camping, though it is worth remembering that wild camping is illegal in England without the landowner's explicit permission, so a proper campsite or a farm pitch arranged in advance is the way to go. The terrain here is distinctive: a mix of limestone pavement, ancient woodland, flower-rich grassland and the vast tidal sands of Morecambe Bay, giving campsites in the area a very different feel to the fells and valleys of the Lake District proper just a few miles north. Sites tend to be small and family-run rather than large holiday parks, often on farmland with views towards the bay or the limestone hills around Warton Crag and Arnside Knott.
The best camping season runs from late spring through early autumn, when the woodlands are at their greenest and the AONB's renowned butterfly populations are most active, though the area is generally milder than the higher ground of the Lakes thanks to its lower elevation and coastal position. Even so, this is still an exposed stretch of coast, and Morecambe Bay's tides move fast across the sands, so anyone camping near the shoreline should take standard coastal safety precautions and never attempt to walk out onto the sands without a local guide, as the bay has a genuine history of trapping the unwary. Autumn brings its own appeal for campers with an interest in wildlife, as the starling murmurations at nearby RSPB Leighton Moss are best seen at dusk, making a nearby campsite a convenient base for repeat visits.
For those who prefer a bit more comfort, glamping options in the wider area include shepherd's huts, safari tents and static pods, often on farms in the villages around Silverdale, Yealand and Warton, giving easy access to the coastal paths and limestone hills without the need to pitch a tent. Whichever way you choose to camp, the compact size of the AONB means most attractions, from Leighton Moss to Jenny Brown's Point, are within a short drive or even a good walk of most sites in the area.
