Camping in Church Stretton

Camping is one of the best ways to experience Church Stretton, given how directly the surrounding hills lend themselves to it. Sites cluster at the foot of the Long Mynd and Caer Caradoc, within a couple of miles of the town, so you can walk from your pitch straight onto the hills rather than driving to a trailhead. Botvyle Farm sits at the base of Caer Caradoc with panoramic views and offers grass and hardstanding pitches with electric hookup. Broadmeadow Campsite, on the edge of the Long Mynd, is a small, quiet, adults-only site open all year. Small Batch Camp Site, a couple of miles south in the village of Little Stretton, also sits right at the foot of the Long Mynd. For something more sheltered, Mountain Edge Resort offers glamping pods with decking alongside an on-site restaurant and bike shop, a good option if you want the hills without full canvas.

Terrain here is proper upland moorland: the Long Mynd rises past 500 metres and is exposed to wind and fast-changing weather even in summer, so pitch choice matters and it is worth checking a site's shelter and drainage before booking. Late spring through early autumn is the most reliable camping season, with the heather-purple weeks of late August and September a particularly good time to pitch up, though nights can still turn cold at altitude. Shropshire is in England, where wild camping is illegal without the landowner's permission — unlike Scotland, there is no general right to pitch on open land here, so stick to the area's established campsites or seek permission directly. With several good sites clustered so close to the hills, though, there is little need to push the point: a short walk from any of them puts you straight onto some of the best ridge and valley walking in the Marches.
