Camping in Coalbrookdale

1 campsite, glamping site and caravan parks

Coalbrookdale sits within a steep, wooded stretch of the Severn valley, and while the scenery is inviting, wild camping without the landowner's permission remains illegal in England, so it is not an option here regardless of how quiet the valley looks. Fortunately, the wider Ironbridge Gorge and surrounding Shropshire countryside have a good range of proper campsites and glamping sites within easy reach, many making the most of the same wooded, riverside landscape that makes the area so scenic. Pitches close to the gorge tend to be smaller and more informal than the large holiday parks found elsewhere in Shropshire, reflecting the tight, hilly terrain of the valley itself.

The steep sides of the gorge mean that level, well-drained pitches are at a premium locally, so many campers base themselves a short drive out in the gentler farmland around Much Wenlock or towards Shrewsbury, then use Coalbrookdale and Ironbridge as a day-trip destination. Facilities at rural sites in this part of Shropshire are generally simple rather than luxurious, in keeping with the area's quiet, unshowy character, though a growing number of glamping operators have set up safari tents, shepherd's huts and pods that offer a more comfortable alternative to a traditional tent while keeping campers close to the woodland and riverside walks the gorge is known for.

Late spring through early autumn is the most comfortable season for camping here, when the woodland is in full leaf and daytime temperatures make the valley's walking trails genuinely pleasant; the ground can be heavy going in the wetter winter months given the clay-rich local soil. Whatever time of year you visit, campers should take ordinary countryside precautions around the brook and the steeper wooded slopes, and always check with site owners or the National Trust and other local landowners before considering camping on any land that is not an established, bookable site.
