Hotels in Cornwall

Choosing where to sleep in Cornwall matters more than in most English counties, because the peninsula is long and the driving is slow. A hotel that looks 40 miles from the attraction you want to see may still be an hour and a half away on single-track lanes in August. Decide first whether you want the north coast, with its surf, big skies and cliff walks, or the softer south coast of estuaries, sailing and sheltered coves, and then book within that half.

Families generally do best around Newquay, Watergate Bay and Crantock, where beaches are wide, lifeguarded through the summer and backed by hotels geared up with kids' clubs, pools and early dinner sittings. Couples looking for quiet tend to be happier in the far west around Penzance, Mousehole and St Just, or on the south coast at Fowey and St Mawes, where evenings are calmer and restaurants smaller. Walkers should base themselves anywhere on the South West Coast Path with a bus route back — Zennor, Boscastle, the Lizard and Porthcurno all work well — and should check whether a hotel will do packed lunches and dry boots.

Price expectations should be set realistically. In July and August, a decent three-star double runs well over £150 a night and the best coastal hotels comfortably exceed £300, often with two- or three-night minimum stays and Saturday-to-Saturday changeovers. The same rooms in May, June, late September and October can be a third cheaper, and the weather in those months is frequently better than people expect. Winter rates fall further still, though some seaside hotels close entirely from November.

Book early for the school summer holidays — six to nine months ahead is normal for the well-known coastal properties, and sea-view rooms go first. For shoulder season, four to six weeks out is usually enough. Always check parking: several harbour towns have no on-site hotel parking, and a remote car park plus a luggage haul down a cobbled hill is a real consideration. Mention dogs at booking, as Cornwall is broadly dog-friendly but allocation is limited to specific rooms.
