Camping in Dalbeattie
11 campsites, glamping sites and caravan parks
Dalbeattie sits at the edge of one of Scotland's better-kept camping secrets: a stretch of forest and coastline in Dumfries and Galloway that sees a fraction of the visitors of the Highlands, but offers similarly good access to wild country. As in the rest of Scotland, wild camping is generally permitted under the Scottish Outdoor Access Code, which gives a right of responsible access to most open land and water, including much of the forest and coastline around Dalbeattie, provided campers follow the code's guidance on group size, leaving no trace, and avoiding land close to houses or enclosed fields. Dalbeattie Forest itself, with its granite outcrops and mixed woodland, and the nearby Solway coast around Rockcliffe and Kippford, both offer realistic options for those wanting a night or two under canvas away from a formal site.
For a more straightforward stay, the area also has established campsites and caravan parks within a short drive of the town, generally set in the countryside towards the coast or along the Urr valley, offering pitches for tents, campervans and touring caravans with the usual facilities. Given the terrain, a good waterproof tent and decent groundsheet are worth having: Galloway's forest and coastal ground can be soft after rain, and conditions change quickly this close to the Solway. Midges are the main irritant for campers here in summer, particularly in the forest in still, damp conditions around dawn and dusk, so repellent and, ideally, a midge-proof tent porch make a real difference between June and August.
Late spring and early autumn are often the most comfortable times to camp, with fewer midges and still-decent daylight for setting up and enjoying an evening in the forest or on the coast. For those who want the outdoor setting without pitching a tent themselves, glamping options including bell tents, pods and safari tents have grown in the area in recent years, usually on farms or smallholdings within reach of both the forest trails and the coast, offering a comfortable middle ground between a hotel and a full wild camp.
