About Camp Dartington

Camp Dartington offers a rare combination: the rustic simplicity of camping in ancient woodland and sloping riverside fields, plus the cultural richness of a medieval estate on your doorstep. The site itself is peaceful and nature-focused—ideal for stargazing and slowing down—with consistently praised hot showers and helpful staff. Though some reviews note the facilities can feel a little tired in places, the setting and warm atmosphere more than compensate.

A short stroll brings you to the Barn Cinema, the estate's listed gardens and deer park, plus forest walks threading through the grounds. Food is sorted on-site: the estate café does breakfast through to tea and cake, while the medieval feasting hall serves lunch and dinner using local organic produce (also sold in the nearby shop). Beyond the estate, Dartington village has artisan stores and the Devon Gin School, and beaches like Blackpool Sands are about 35 minutes by car.

I was so excited for this campsite after a few days wild camping on Dartmoor… turns out it wasn’t much of an upgrade! Overgrown grass, pitch-black site. The women’s bathrooms were small and dirty, the kitchen bins overflowing… no sign of cleaning in the four days I was there. No sign of staff at the campsite reception either. I phoned ahead of my stay to add an extra night or two onto the trip (the weather wasn’t great on the moor) – no answer to three calls, no response to my voicemail even now. Elsewhere I can’t fault Dartington Hall – amazing gardens, food, cinema, staff, shop, good walking route to Totnes. But the campsite hasn’t even managed to nail the basics. And, especially as a solo camper in a one-man tent, I feel conned paying £25 a night for it.

Lovely quiet field but disappointing service (noone on site) and facilities for the price. We stayed in our motorhome so luckily have our own facilities. The showers weren't very clean though they worked OK. Toilets not always clean . Washing up area pretty grubby for campers. Didn't seem to have been cleaned for a long while. The grey waste point is next to where people can get fresh water , which is not hygienic. We became members of Dartington hall estate as we had planned to stay regularly throughout the year. We stayed in August, having stayed a couple of months before. We had high hopes for improvements following the take over of the site but other than adding a few more pitches for motorhomes there have been little to no changes other than a disappointing hike in the price. Sadly despite the setting the cost doesn't reflect the facilities or service. It wasn't easy to book with our 10 %discount as a member though they did email it through but it took a few phone calls first before hearing back. We love the estate so probably would be back but things need to improve or I feel Dartington will lose this potential lovely campsite We realise it is hard to run businesses and keep costs down but the standards and rise in price are driving people away. Even an improvement in proper cleaning would help. We wish the owners all the best and hope to see improvements when we next stay.

Beautiful location. Shower/toilet block needs serious maintenance/ rebuilding. Defo not enough space in women’s for mums supervising children brushing teeth etc. Showers constantly flooded. Couldn’t download pitch number on phone when I arrived. Seems a bit pointless when you have a massive field with loads of space and end up with new arrival’s pegs virtually in your tent (to be fare, they were the given the pitch next to us). But why? Lots of potential and I am sure with a bit of investment will be fabulous.

We liked staying on this site as the location is great and the it's nice and quiet. It is let down a little by the lack of anyone on site, there was no paper towels in any of the holders for the entire 2 nights (3 days) we were there and toilet paper had also run out in every toilet by Saturday, as there is noone on site you have to call a number and to be fair they did come and top it up later that day (still no hand towels though) but it does mean that either no cleaners were present for over a day or they just neglected to check. This was the only thing that let down an otherwise great campsite. We stayed last year and had a similar experience.
