About The Rock Inn
The Rock Inn is an 18th-century coaching inn in the hamlet of Haytor Vale, a mile or so below Haytor Rocks inside Dartmoor National Park. It has been run by the Graves family for decades and still works as a village pub as well as a small hotel, with flagstone floors, settles, open fires in winter and a garden at the front that fills up on summer afternoons.
There are nine en-suite bedrooms, all named after Grand National winners, spread over two floors of the old building. They are comfortable and traditional rather than fashionable: several have four-poster beds, one has a balcony, and the top-floor deluxe rooms are the largest. All have a bathroom or shower room, television and tea and coffee tray. The building's age means the rooms differ in size and shape, and the stairs are steep, which is worth knowing if mobility is a concern.
The kitchen has held two AA rosettes and is the reason many people book, serving proper pub cooking with some ambition using Devon meat, West Country cheeses and fish landed at Brixham. Breakfast is substantial and included. There is free parking on site, which matters on this part of the moor.
The location is the main argument for staying. Haytor is one of the most accessible and best-known tors on Dartmoor and can be walked from the door in under half an hour; the granite tramway, Hound Tor and Becka Falls are all close by. Bovey Tracey is three miles down the hill for shops and the Devon Guild of Craftsmen, and the south Devon coast at Teignmouth is about half an hour by car. It suits walkers, dog owners and couples wanting a straightforward, well-run inn rather than a resort hotel.

An exceptional hotel experience from start to finish. The rooms were beautifully designed, spacious, comfortable, and maintained to the highest standard. The dining experience was equally impressive. Every meal was outstanding, with creativity, presentation, and flavors that felt close to Michelin-star quality. The food was consistently delicious and clearly prepared with great care and attention to detail. After three weeks of traveling, this was without a doubt the best hotel and dining experience of our entire trip. The combination of outstanding accommodations, excellent service, and remarkable cuisine made our stay truly memorable. We would highly recommend The Rock and look forward to returning in the future.

Absolutely recommend this place for dinner if you are staying nearby. We had dinner here and took our dog long with us. The team were welcoming and so friendly. The food was exceptional, presentation and flavours were amazing. The steak with smoked watercress sauce was honestly one of the best things I've eaten.

Incredible tasting menu We've enjoyed dining at the Rock twice now, once for a lunch set menu, then because that was so good, we came back last night for their Saturday tasting menu. Everything was brilliant. We've been fortunate enough to have had a few different tasting menu experiences around the UK and abroad, and we both felt that this one was up there. We couldn't fault a single dish - everything was delicious and the service was excellent, and their gluten-free adaptations for me were bang on. At no point did we feel rushed or neglected - we spent a very enjoyable 2.5 hours over dinner and LOVED the birthday surprise at the end for my husband - that marshmallow was insane 🤤. We're sometimes left a bit uncomfortable after a big blowout tasting menu, but this one was absolutely bang on with portion control - both comfortably full and waxing lyrical about how amazing the food was all the way home. Thank you for looking after us and our dog, we'll definitely be back!

We enjoyed an overnight stay here and were absolutely blown away by their restaurant/pub food. The deconstructed Waldorf salad was stunning. And the fried mackerel was perfectly done!
