Dolgellau's hotels split naturally into two settings: the dark-stone coaching inns right in the town centre, and a smaller number of estuary-side properties a short drive out towards Penmaenpool and the Mawddach. Staying in town puts you within a few minutes' walk of the square, the main pubs and restaurants, and the start of both the Torrent Walk and the Mawddach Trail, making it the practical choice if you don't want to rely on a car for evenings out. These town-centre hotels are generally traditional in style — thick stone walls, low beams, log fires — reflecting buildings that have been serving travellers since well before the tourist trade existed, with double rooms typically running from around £90 to £140 a night in season.

Out at Penmaenpool, hotels such as the George III sit directly on the tidal Mawddach with private moorings and estuary views, appealing to walkers finishing the Mawddach Trail and anyone prioritising scenery over proximity to the town's shops and pubs; a short drive or a flat cycle along the old railway path connects back into Dolgellau itself. Guesthouses and B&Bs are scattered through the surrounding countryside towards Brithdir, Bontddu and Llanelltyd, often in period farmhouses, and tend to offer better value and a quieter base for walkers heading up Cader Idris or out to Coed y Brenin for mountain biking.

Because Dolgellau is a genuine working town rather than a purpose-built resort, its hotel stock is relatively small, and demand from walkers, cyclists and festival-goers means good rooms get booked up well in advance for peak weekends — particularly around the July Sesiwn Fawr festival and school summer holidays. Booking two to three months ahead for a summer weekend is sensible; outside July and August, and especially in winter, availability opens up considerably and some properties offer reduced off-season rates, though a few also cut their opening hours or close entirely for short winter breaks, so it's worth checking directly before booking.
