Filching

Filching is a small, sparsely populated hamlet within the civil parish of Willingdon and Jevington, tucked beneath the northern edge of the South Downs a short distance from Polegate and Wannock, and just a few miles inland from Eastbourne. It is more a scatter of farms and old buildings than a village in the usual sense, with the surrounding chalk downland doing most of the talking.

The hamlet's best-known landmark is Filching Manor, a manor house dating from around 1450 that now houses a motor museum. Beyond the manor, Filching's appeal is really its setting: quiet lanes, downland views, and easy access to the walking country that rises up towards Windover Hill and Wilmington to the west.

Filching lies just off the A22, close to Polegate and Wannock, making it an easy detour for anyone travelling between Eastbourne and the Weald. Polegate railway station, on the Eastbourne line, is the nearest rail connection, a short drive or taxi ride away. There is no significant public transport running directly into the hamlet itself, so a car is the most practical way to explore the area.

Late spring through early autumn suits the South Downs walking that is the main draw here, with long daylight hours for exploring Wannock Glen and the downland above Wilmington. Autumn brings crisp air and good visibility from the higher ground, while winter visits are quieter still, best suited to short, brisk walks and a look around the motor museum.
