0 handpicked places to stay

Filey's appeal for a hotel or self-catering break is its unhurried, traditional seaside character combined with a genuinely excellent beach. Seafront hotels and guesthouses along the Crescent and Rutland Street look straight out over the bay towards Filey Brigg, many in handsome Victorian and Georgian buildings that have been welcoming holidaymakers for well over a century. These tend to suit couples and older visitors after a classic English coastal stay, with cooked breakfasts, sea views and an easy stroll down to the promenade.

Families are often better served by the self-catering cottages clustered around the older streets near the Ravine and the town centre, many within a five-minute walk of both the beach and the shops on Queen Street. These properties range from compact fishermen's cottages to larger houses that can sleep extended family groups, and most come with the kind of garden or courtyard space that makes it easy to dry off wetsuits and stow buckets and spades after a day on the sand. Booking ahead is worthwhile for the peak summer weeks, when Filey's relatively small stock of accommodation fills quickly, but outside July and August there is usually good availability and better rates, especially for the spring and autumn periods when the birdwatching on the Brigg is at its best.
