Fordingbridge makes a relaxed base for a New Forest stay, combining an easy-going market town with fast access to some of Hampshire's best countryside. Because the town itself has a limited number of hotels, many visitors choose a comfortable base in or around Fordingbridge and use it as a springboard for day trips into the National Park, along the Avon Valley, or across to the Georgian streets of Salisbury and the coast at Bournemouth and Christchurch.
Riverside inns such as The George offer characterful rooms right in the centre of town, putting the museum, shops and bridge on your doorstep, while country house hotels and B&Bs in the surrounding villages of Breamore, Hyde and Rockbourne suit those after a quieter, more rural stay. Families and longer-stay visitors often prefer the holiday lodges and self-catering options at Sandy Balls Holiday Village on the edge of town, which combine New Forest woodland with easy access back into Fordingbridge itself.
Wherever you stay, Fordingbridge's position just inside the New Forest boundary means ancient woodland, open heath and the free-roaming ponies the area is famous for are only a short drive or cycle away, while Salisbury's cathedral and Bournemouth's beaches are both comfortably reachable for a day out. Booking ahead is worth doing over summer weekends and during New Forest events, when accommodation across the wider area fills up quickly.
