Camping in Frodsham
2 campsites, glamping sites and caravan parks
Frodsham sits on the northern end of Cheshire's Sandstone Ridge, and it is this terrain — steep wooded hillsides, exposed sandstone outcrops and heathland giving way to flat Mersey marshland below — that shapes camping in the area. As with the rest of England, wild camping without the landowner's permission is illegal here, so pitching up on Frodsham Hill, in Delamere Forest or out on the marsh without prior arrangement is not an option; stick to licensed sites and bookable pitches instead.
The closest proper camping is clustered around Delamere Forest a few miles south, where a handful of small campsites and caravan parks offer tent pitches within easy reach of the forest's waymarked trails and Blakemere Moss. Further along the Sandstone Trail towards Beeston and Peckforton, more rural sites make use of the ridge's wooded, hilly landscape, popular with people walking the trail in stages over a weekend rather than in one push. Closer to Frodsham itself, options are thinner on the ground, so many visitors base themselves slightly further out and drive or walk in for the day.
For those who want more comfort than a tent but still fancy sleeping among the trees, glamping has taken hold around Delamere and the wider Cheshire ridge in recent years, with pods, shepherd's huts and safari tents offering a warmer alternative to canvas without losing the sense of being out in the forest. This suits families and less experienced campers who still want the views and woodland walks that draw people to the area.
Late spring through early autumn is the most comfortable window for camping here, when paths on the sandstone ridge are drier and evenings on the hill are long enough to catch the sunset over the Mersey. Sites do get busy on summer weekends and during half-term, so booking ahead is worthwhile, particularly for anything close to Delamere Forest. Autumn adds the bonus of the forest's colour and Frodsham Marsh's migrating birdlife for campers happy to wrap up for cooler nights.
