Camping in Gisburn

Gisburn Forest and the surrounding Forest of Bowland offer some of the best camping country in Lancashire, but it is worth remembering that wild camping is illegal in England without the express permission of the landowner — this applies across the forest, moorland and reservoir margins around Gisburn, however remote they may feel. Instead, look to the area's established campsites and caravan parks, several of which sit within a short drive of the village and make an excellent base for mountain biking at the Forest Hub or walking the wider AONB.

The terrain here ranges from gentle valley pasture around the Ribble to exposed moorland higher into Bowland, so pitches lower in the valley tend to be more sheltered than sites up on the open fell. Spring through early autumn is the most reliable camping season, with firmer ground and longer daylight for exploring the forest trails; conditions can turn wet underfoot outside these months, and higher ground can be windy and cold even in summer, so a well-pegged tent and warm kit are worth having regardless of season.

For those who would rather skip the tent altogether, glamping options in the wider Ribble Valley and Bowland area — shepherd's huts, pods and static caravans — offer a comfortable alternative with the same access to the forest, reservoir and moorland on the doorstep. Many combine easily with a stay in Gisburn itself, giving campers the chance to enjoy the village's pubs and historic church alongside a night or two under canvas out in Bowland.
