Hotel Portmeirion has stood at the centre of Clough Williams-Ellis's fantasy Italianate village since it first opened in 1926, its terrace looking directly out over the sandy beaches of the Dwyryd estuary. The hotel retains much of its original character, including an ornate Victorian fireplace, the Mirror Room and a grand eighteenth-century staircase, alongside 14 individually styled bedrooms across the main house and village.

Guests staying at the hotel receive free entry to Portmeirion village and its subtropical gardens, along with use of the heated outdoor swimming pool between April and September. The Art Deco restaurant has built a strong reputation for food that draws heavily on Welsh coastal and farm produce, served in a room that looks straight out across the estuary.

Roughly eight miles south of Harlech across the Dwyryd, this is a good choice for anyone wanting to combine a stay in the Harlech area with time exploring Portmeirion itself, or for a special-occasion break with a genuinely distinctive setting.
