8 handpicked places to stay

Harlech's accommodation is small in scale but wide in character, from centuries-old inns on the steep lanes below the castle to country house hotels set in their own grounds a few minutes' drive away. Because the town itself is compact, almost everywhere to stay puts you within easy reach of the castle, the beach and the golf links, so the choice tends to come down to atmosphere and budget rather than location.

At the upper end, Talsarnau's country house hotels occupy historic manor buildings set in landscaped grounds looking out over the Dwyryd estuary, offering formal dining and a genuinely restful base for a longer stay, while Portmeirion's flagship hotel gives a very different, more theatrical stay inside Clough Williams-Ellis's Italianate village a short drive south. In the town itself, a handful of restaurants-with-rooms and small hotels occupy old stone buildings on the high street, trading grand scale for character, good food and a genuine sense of place.

For a more modest budget, Harlech and its surrounding villages have a good spread of B&Bs and guest houses, many run by local families for years and offering the kind of home-cooked Welsh breakfast that sets you up for a day on the hills or the beach. Several of these sit on the steep lanes immediately below the castle and are not well suited to heavy luggage, so it is worth checking access before booking if mobility is a concern. Booking ahead for the summer months is strongly advised, since Harlech's total number of rooms is small relative to its popularity with golfers, walkers and families heading for the beach.
