What visitors say
Loved the garden — absolutely beautiful with loads to see! The house was fascinating too, and the staff were so knowledgeable and eager to share. Even though I didn’t visit with children, there were plenty of fun things for them. I struggle a bit with walking, but everything was perfectly accessible. Can’t wait to visit again

Gorgeous garden to wander around. The house is very interesting. The ruined part has been excellently planted. Two cafes on site. Great facilities. Informative guides in the rooms.

The house was not open when we visited but the grounds were and the flower and trees were stunning. Cannot wait to visit again in the Summer to see them in full bloom. The plant and gift shop is worth a visit as is the resident artist hut. Finally take a chance to have a cup of tea and food in the excellent cafe.

Magnificent gardens, well worth visiting. We spent 5 hours here! Stunning views across the Sussex countryside and Ouse valley, magnificent Lime walk. Mighty trees, interesting plants, including orchids, meadows as well as landscaped areas, all well cared for by expert volunteers. Calm shady woodland play area for children. Friendly artist in residence John Thompson, who painted the promotional poster for the popular eighties children’s film Tarka The Otter. Great second hand bookshop with excellent selection and quality art section. Although the main house was mainly destroyed by fire in 1947 (an attempt to defrost frozen pipes) there are still some rooms to see and palm gardens in the ruins. Two good cafes and, mercifully, no dogs which makes it much more relaxing and pleasant with smaller children. Will definitely be back.
