Lower Hilton Cottage

Photo: Lower Hilton Cottage

You arrive at Lower Hilton Cottage through the back door, stepping straight into a dining room with the rest of the house spreading out from there. Downstairs, a double bedroom sits alongside a sitting room where a wood burner faces out towards hills and the estuary beyond. The kitchen is characterful rather than contemporary, and a bathroom serves the ground floor. Stairs lead up to two further bedrooms with dual-aspect windows and long views across the landscape. The cottage holds six people across its three bedrooms, with linen and towels provided. Wifi and electricity are included. Outside, a mature garden laid mostly to lawn offers space to sit; it's unfenced and leads into the surrounding woodland.

Lower Hilton Cottage stands on the edge of Culrain, a hamlet in the Northern Highlands where Carbisdale Castle (built in 1905) anchors the locality. The setting is genuinely quiet—woodland screens the cottage, and the Kyle of Sutherland's views open up from the upper rooms. Ardgay village, a ten-minute drive away, has a shop; a further fifteen minutes across the estuary brings restaurants, a butcher and more services. This stretch of the Highlands holds well-known salmon rivers with permits available at reasonable rates, and several championship golf courses: Royal Dornoch is the most famous, though Golspie and Brora—both James Braid designs—draw serious players too. The walking, mountain biking and road cycling here are extensive and uncrowed. One dog is welcome. No smoking.

We’ve stayed at this beautiful cottage during X-mas 2023. Such a treat to see parts of the NC500 route while coming back to this place in the afternoon. The only rare sounds you hear are the sheep in the field behind the cottage, a babbling brook and the fireplace. The interior is stylish, clean and cozy. The kitchen is a real gem with great stuff that actually wants you to cook and bake. If you ever have the chance to visit this part of Scotland don’t hesitate to make Lower Hilton Cottage your home base.

Fabulous rural cottage with lovely Scandi-style interior decor. Great place to get away from the hustle and bustle.

We had an incredible week-long break at Lower Hilton Cottage. The interior is cosy, modern and beautifully designed. There is a fully equipped kitchen, super comfy sofas inside a large living room with a wood-burner, and the three bedrooms will sleep six adults or children. Broadband internet is quick for the area and phone signal on some networks is very good. This means you can getaway to the wilds of Scotland, but still maintain contact with the world if you wish. Everything you could possibly need was available. The hosts were extremely helpful, with plenty of guidance provided before we arrived and whenever needed throughout our stay. There is plenty of hiking and cycling in the surrounding area. There are lochs, wild woods, sprawling coastal vista and even an area to watch wild salmon leap up a waterfall, if you are there at the right time of year. This is truly one of the wildest and most beautiful parts of the United Kingdom. Dornoch and other pretty towns are nearby. And you are close to some excellent whiskey distilleries which you can tour and sample the goods too! It’s ideal as a romantic getaway, place for a group of friends for a long weekend, or a family break away from daily life. We will be back!
