Camping in Holmrook
8 campsites, glamping sites and caravan parks
Wild camping without the landowner's permission is illegal in England, including throughout the Lake District National Park, so anyone hoping to camp rough on the fells above Holmrook should be aware they are technically trespassing, however common the practice has become in remote parts of Wasdale. Fortunately the area has a good supply of proper campsites instead, many of them well placed for both the mountains and the coast. Wasdale itself has a well-known National Trust campsite close to Wastwater, hugely popular with climbers and walkers tackling Scafell Pike, while further sites are dotted through Eskdale, often set in wooded or riverside positions that offer more shelter than the open fellside. The terrain around Holmrook is a genuine mix: gentle, low-lying ground close to the village and the coast, rising quickly to steep, rocky and exposed fells only a few miles inland, so campers heading up into Wasdale or upper Eskdale should come prepared for changeable mountain weather even in summer. The best camping season here runs from late spring through to early autumn, when the ground is drier, midges are more manageable than in high summer, and the long evening light over Wastwater and the surrounding peaks is at its best; winter camping in this part of Cumbria is very much for experienced and well-equipped campers only, given how quickly conditions on the surrounding fells can deteriorate. For those who want the scenery without the full camping kit, glamping options have grown steadily in the area, with pods, yurts and safari tents available at sites in Eskdale and along the coast, offering proper beds and often log burners while still keeping Wastwater, Scafell Pike and the Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway within easy reach. Given how quiet this part of Cumbria remains compared with the central Lakes, campsites here tend to be smaller and more low-key, which suits visitors looking for a straightforward, unfussy base among some of England's finest mountain scenery.
