Camping in Hughley

Hughley and the Wenlock Edge countryside around it offer some genuinely peaceful camping, set against wooded limestone hills and quiet farmland. It is worth being clear from the outset that wild camping is illegal in England without the landowner's permission, Shropshire included, so pitching up on the Edge itself or in surrounding fields without asking first is not an option, however tempting the views. What the area does offer instead is a good spread of small, certified campsites and farm-based sites in the villages around Much Wenlock and Church Stretton, many family-run and set up specifically to make the most of walking access onto Wenlock Edge, the Long Mynd or the Stiperstones.

The terrain here rewards a bit of planning: Wenlock Edge itself is a steep-sided wooded escarpment, so sites tend to sit either in the sheltered valleys either side of it (Ape Dale to the west, Corve Dale to the east) or up on the more open hill country further south towards Church Stretton. Ground can be uneven and exposed to the weather on the higher sites, so a sturdy tent and a solid stake kit are worth having, particularly outside the summer months.

Late spring to early autumn is the best window, broadly April through September, when the woodland paths along the Edge are driest and evenings are long enough for a proper camp supper outdoors. May and June bring bluebells to the beech woods; high summer brings the best long-distance views from the escarpment; September can be quieter with campsites less booked up, though nights start drawing in and turning colder. For those who would rather skip the tent-pitching altogether, glamping options in the wider area – shepherd's huts, yurts and static safari tents – are increasingly common on Shropshire farms, offering a comfortable way to wake up to the same hill views without needing your own kit.
