8 handpicked places to stay

Knaresborough's accommodation ranges from a genuine stately home to simple, well-run bed and breakfasts a few doors from the Market Place, with plenty of character in between. At the top end, Goldsborough Hall offers a rare chance to stay in a Jacobean manor house with royal history just outside the town, while the General Tarleton at nearby Ferrensby pairs award-winning pub cooking with a handful of well-appointed rooms. Both suit a special occasion or an anniversary break as much as a straightforward stay.
In the middle, the Knaresborough Inn sits right in town by the river with the space and facilities of a small hotel — including an indoor pool — at a more accessible price point, while the Blue Bell Country Inn in nearby Arkendale and the Orchard Club guesthouse on York Place both offer comfortable, characterful rooms without the formality of a full hotel. These are solid choices for a weekend away or a stopover en route to the Dales or the coast.
For something smaller and more personal, Knaresborough's bed and breakfasts punch well above their size. Teardrop Cottage, tucked beside the river in the Nidd Gorge with castle views from some rooms, Kirkgate House in a 17th-century townhouse two minutes from the station, and Gallon House overlooking the gorge are all well-reviewed, family-run properties where breakfast is taken seriously. Book ahead in summer and around the Bed Race weekend in June, when rooms across the town fill quickly.
