About The Grange Country House

The Grange is a Victorian house on Manor Brow, set above Keswick on the road out towards Castlerigg, with a view down over the rooftops of the town to Derwentwater and the fells beyond. It has been run as a guest house for many years and is consistently among the highest-rated small properties in the northern Lake District. The house keeps its period proportions, with bay windows, high ceilings and a sitting room with a fire.

There are ten bedrooms, all individually decorated, including one on the ground floor for guests who would rather avoid stairs. Rooms vary from compact doubles to larger front-facing rooms with the full view; all are en-suite, and the fittings are kept up to date rather than left in a state of Victorian authenticity. Breakfast is cooked to order using Cumbrian bacon and sausage, with vegetarian options, and is served in the dining room overlooking the garden.

Practical details are handled well. There is ample free parking on site, which is a real advantage in Keswick, plus an electric vehicle charging point and free wifi throughout. Guests are given complimentary access to the leisure facilities at a nearby spa hotel, which covers a pool and gym that a house of this size could not provide itself. The owners are generous with route advice and know the local walks properly.

Keswick town centre, the market square and the theatre are about ten minutes' walk downhill, and the Derwentwater launch jetties a little beyond that. Latrigg, Walla Crag and the Castlerigg stone circle are all reachable on foot. It suits couples, walkers and older visitors who want a proper breakfast and a quiet house rather than a hotel, and it is small enough that booking well ahead for summer and half-term is sensible.

We've just enjoyed 3 wonderful nights at Grange Country House and can say with absolute certainty that we'll be back! The magnificent house is set amidst the most stunning countryside... It's jaw-dropping to pull up to. We were greeted warmly by Jamie. He made us feel very welcome and showed us around the house - it's just as gorgeous on the inside as the outside! Our room was lovely, and stayed remarkably cool considering it was the middle of a heatwave (helped by the very effective fan provided). The view was superb. Throughout our stay we were looked after very well - all the the staff were warm, friendly and attentive, and happy to provide advice about the local area, things to do and places to eat. There was a good range of breakfast options available, and everything we tried was really beautifully cooked. The porridge and the scrambled eggs with smoked salmon were particularly good. We can't wait to return in the future.

This was the perfect home base while we were in Keswick! We only stayed for two nights but wish we could stay for longer. They automatically upgraded us for our anniversary to a larger room and when we entered, there were flowers from their garden waiting with a card signed by the whole family. Breakfast was delicious with some fabulous views of the Catbells and their gorgeous garden. The location was perfect for us. Close enough to town to go grab dinner but far enough to feel more private. Thank you for a wonderful stay!

We had an outstanding stay at this beautifully presented B&B. Nothing was too much trouble for our host, Mark and the family were full of useful information about the area. A most enjoyable stay. Whilst it was a bit of a hike up from the town (15 minutes) we soon found that the local buses provided an excellent service to a nearby bus stop. The buses were reasonably frequent (even on a Sunday) and kept very good time, despite the heavy seasonal traffic. It proved to be a low-stress way to get around.

Where to begin! My husband and I just wrapped up an enchanting honeymoon stay at the Grange Country House. I'm not sure we could have asked for a better location, better staff, or better views. Unlike the inns at the center of Keswick, this one is a bit removed, and oh-so-wonderfully-quiet. But you can still walk right out the door, be in town within 5 minutes, and on the trail to hike the fells in very short order. We stayed in the Superior Double Room on the ground floor, with remarkable views of the fells, and it was the ideal launchpad for the six days we were there. Sally, Mark, Adam, Max, Michael, and Jamie all went above and beyond in making us feel at home. We shared some laughs and they gave us fantastic insight to maximize our Lake District getaway. We can't wait to return. Three cheers for the Grange Country House!
