Camping in Laxey

1 campsite, glamping site and caravan parks

Camping in Laxey and the surrounding hills is a low-key affair rather than a purpose-built holiday park scene, reflecting the Isle of Man more broadly, where formal campsites are few and wild camping sits in a different legal position to England, Wales or Scotland. There is no general right to camp on private land here, and pitching a tent, whether in a farmer's field, on the open hillside below Snaefell or along the coast, generally requires the landowner's permission first; the Manx countryside is largely a patchwork of private farmland and National Trust-style Manx National Heritage sites rather than open access land, so it pays to ask locally or check with the landowner rather than assume a spot is fair game. Some farms and smallholdings around Laxey and the neighbouring Glen villages do welcome campers informally or run small basic sites, and asking in the village or at a local pub is often the quickest way to find out what is currently available.

For a more comfortable and reliably available alternative, glamping pods, static caravans and shepherd's huts have become increasingly popular across the island in recent years, offering a fixed base with the same access to the glen, the wheel and the mountain railway without the uncertainty of finding a legal pitch. These tend to book up around TT fortnight in late May and early June, when accommodation of every kind on the island comes under pressure, so early booking matters if visiting then. Outside of TT, the best camping and glamping weather runs from late spring through early autumn, roughly May to September, when longer days make the most of walks up Snaefell and along the coastal path, and when the mountain railway and most seasonal cafés are running full services. Whatever the setup, layering up is wise even in summer, since Laxey's position at the foot of the island's highest ground means weather can turn quickly, and proper waterproofs are as useful as a groundsheet.
