Camping in Ledbury
6 campsites, glamping sites and caravan parks
Camping around Ledbury puts you within reach of both the Malvern Hills and Herefordshire's orchard country, with sites ranging from simple rural fields to fuller-facility touring parks. As in the rest of England, wild camping without the landowner's permission is not legal here, so pitching up on the open hillside or in a farmer's field without asking first should be avoided; the exception is small pockets of Dartmoor, which does not apply to this part of the Welsh Marches, so a proper campsite or a landowner's explicit go-ahead is the way to do it properly. Fortunately, the area around Ledbury has a good spread of small, independently run sites, many on working farms among the county's hop yards and cider orchards, alongside a growing number of glamping options — shepherd's huts, safari tents and converted horseboxes — for those who want the countryside setting without the full kit list. The Malvern Hills themselves sit just to the east, and several sites within a few miles of Ledbury make a good base for walking the ridge, taking in viewpoints like British Camp, before returning to camp in the evening. Herefordshire's gently undulating terrain and lower rainfall than the hills further west also make it a comfortable county for tent camping compared with wetter, more exposed parts of Wales and the West Country. The best camping season here runs from late spring through to early autumn, when the orchards are either in blossom or fruiting and the Malverns are at their most walkable; Ledbury Poetry Festival in July is a popular time to combine a stay with events in town, so it is worth booking ahead for pitches close to the centre during that period. Sites closer to Eastnor and the castle grounds put you within easy reach of family attractions and woodland walks, while those further into the countryside around Much Marcle lean more towards a quiet, cider-country retreat. Facilities vary considerably from basic field pitches with a standpipe and compost toilet through to fuller touring parks with electric hook-ups, showers and on-site shops, so it is worth checking exactly what is included before booking, particularly for anyone travelling with a caravan or motorhome rather than a tent.
