It was a hot day when we ate here. Inside was a little hot but overall nice warm atmosphere with dim lighting. The French onion soup was delicious. Snails were made perfectly, with a nice sauce to dip your bread in. Steak was cooked properly and was tender. Would go again.

We chose to dine here after having read the multitude of 4.5-5 star ratings. This was a small and authentic restaurant situated surprisingly on Brick Lane. A perky waitress served us and seated us promptly, offering us a jug of water. For wine drinkers, I must add that there was an extensive wine menu available. There were red candles lit on every table and dim overhead lighting, giving that romantic feeling throughout. French artwork adorned every wall and I heard the chefs in the open doored kitchen downstairs communicating to one another and the waitress in fluent French, leading me to believe that this indeed was an authentic French restaurant. We started with a French onion soup as an entree; this was authentic tasting, a lovely thin broth with lots of caramelized onions and croutons within. The soup was covered in a thick and gooey layer of cheese, which personally I could have done without, as I’m not much of a cheese fan. (see pic below for the amount of cheese leftover after finishing the soup…) From my understanding, the cheese layer is traditional on the onion soup. Perhaps if it were served with a piece of bread, it would have been easier to digest the ungodly amount of cheese. My date opted for a steak plate with ‘frites’ / (fries), peppercorn sauce and salad. Oddly his sauce wasn’t the typical peppercorn sauce but rather the typical French, lemon nuanced Bernaise Sauce simply mislabeled as peppercorn sauce. He enjoyed the steak and sauce and fries greatly. I ordered the confit duck, and enjoyed every last bite of it, as the duck was extremely tender and falling off the bone and the skin on top of it crispy, to the point of crackling when bit into! My duck was served on a bed of beans and a lentil soup, which was flavoursome and very wholesome. I must say, I was very pleasantly surprised by the broth beneath the duck. It was filling, healthy and unexpectedly gave a nod towards my Indian ancestry ie. Daal. Over all, I think this restaurant was authentic, intimate, romantic and unique in its own right. The friendly service and lovely decor really rounded off the delicious food served. I would rate it 5/5 and will definitely be planning a visit again soon!

I love that place ! It was our second time in Chez Elles. I think now it's a place where we want to go with my colleagues each time were in London. I usually don't eat french food in my own country (as I'm french) but this restaurant is really really good. And their french fries are the best I ever had! I recommended!

Chez Elles is a very quaint, cozy and romantic venue out of Brick Lane. Really love the decor and attention to detail. The service was friendly and correct, they even offered us to provide to try two reds they were testing for the restaurant. Food came quite quickly and it was a pleasant atmosphere. Having said that, I found it extremely pricey for what it was. 25 pounds for mussels and fries? 1kgs mussels will cost 6 pounds at a good fishmonger, and potatoes how much? Yet the portion I got was ridiculously small for the price. Snails were tasteless. Souffle wasn't bad but not wow. Again, I found the food very average for the price.
