Camping in Longstock

Longstock sits in one of Hampshire's prettiest river valleys, but formal campsites in the immediate village are scarce, as much of the surrounding land belongs to the working Leckford Estate. As in the rest of England, wild camping without the landowner's explicit permission is not legal here, so visitors should look to established sites in the wider Test Valley and around Stockbridge and Andover rather than pitching beside the river itself.

The chalk downland and water meadows around Longstock make for gentle, well-drained walking country, and nearby campsites tend to combine easy access to the Test Way footpath with proximity to Stockbridge's shops, pubs and fishing beats. Fields here drain quickly after rain thanks to the chalk beneath, which helps keep pitches usable through a typical Hampshire spring and autumn, though conditions are, as ever, at their best from May to September when days are longer and the water gardens and farm shops nearby are in full swing.

For those who prefer a roof over their heads without booking a hotel, glamping and shepherd's hut style stays have become increasingly common across this part of Hampshire, offering a comfortable middle ground between a tent and a village inn. Given how compact Longstock is, campers and glampers alike will usually find themselves basing a stay slightly outside the village and driving or walking in for the water garden, the river, and a meal at the Peat Spade or in Stockbridge, rather than expecting an on-site pitch in the conservation village itself.
