Birchwood Farm Camping and Caravanning occupies a working farm at Whatstandwell, just off the A6 around four miles south of Matlock Bath, on the stretch of the Derwent Valley shared with Cromford and the wider World Heritage Site. The Smith family has run the site as a campsite since the 1920s, and it retains a genuinely old-fashioned, farm-based character alongside its modern touring facilities.
The site takes tents, touring caravans, motorhomes and small campervans across a mix of electric and hardstanding pitches, with thirty-seven electric hook-ups available. A toilet and shower block offers free hot showers, and an on-site shop stocks basics such as bread, milk, ice cream and confectionery, useful for anyone not wanting to drive out for supplies. A covered barn houses table tennis and other games, giving families a dry option on wetter days.
Dogs are welcome provided they are kept on leads, and the site's position just off the A6 and close to the Cromford and Derwent Valley Heritage Way footpaths makes it a practical, unfussy base for exploring Matlock Bath, Cromford Mill and the surrounding valley. Its long history as a family camping farm gives it a loyal following among regular visitors, alongside a steady flow of newcomers drawn by its straightforward facilities and central Derwent Valley location.
