Camping in Minchinhampton

There is no campsite directly on Minchinhampton Common — it is National Trust grazing land grazed by cattle and horses, and camping there without permission is not permitted. As with all wild land in England, pitching a tent without the landowner's consent is against the law, so campers should always book a proper site or seek explicit permission rather than pitching up on the Common or any other open land nearby.

That said, the wider Golden Valley and Stroud district around Minchinhampton has a good spread of small, independent campsites and glamping sites set on working farms, typically offering grass pitches for tents alongside a growing number of shepherd's huts, bell tents and safari tents for those who want fewer poles to wrestle with. The steep, wooded valley sides around Nailsworth and Woodchester give some sites a sheltered, tucked-away feel quite different from the open plateau above, while sites closer to the Common itself trade that shelter for sweeping views over the Severn Vale.

The terrain here is genuinely hilly Cotswold escarpment country, so it suits campers happy with some up-and-down walking to reach pubs, shops or the Common's footpaths; a car is useful for reaching most sites, though a few are within walking distance of Stroud's railway station. May to September is the most reliable camping season, when the Common's orchids and wildflowers are at their best and evenings are long enough for a walk up to the Bulwarks or across to Rodborough Common after pitching camp. Spring and fine autumn weekends can also be lovely, though the exposed high ground means conditions can turn quickly, so it is worth packing for wind and rain even in summer. For a treat, several local farms offer glamping with wood-fired hot tubs or log burners, making a comfortable alternative to a tent for a weekend exploring the wool towns of the Golden Valley.
