0 handpicked places to stay

Newton Stewart works well as a low-key base for exploring Galloway, with accommodation generally quieter and better value than better-known Scottish tourist towns. Expect traditional country hotels and inns rather than big chains, plus a good spread of B&Bs in the town itself and self-catering cottages scattered through the surrounding hills and along the Cree valley. Creebridge, just over the river from the main town, has a long-standing country house hotel that makes a comfortable base for walkers and anglers. Booking ahead is wise during the Wigtown Book Festival in late September, when accommodation across the wider area fills up quickly, and in summer when forest park visitor numbers peak. Outside those periods, availability is generally good and prices stay reasonable. A car is genuinely useful here: while the town centre is walkable, the best of the surrounding area, from Glen Trool to the Machars coast, is spread out and lightly served by public transport, so staying centrally in Newton Stewart still means driving out most days.
