Titchwell Manor sits on the coast road between Brancaster and Thornham, a red-brick Victorian farmhouse that has been extended and reworked into one of the better-known hotels on the north Norfolk coast. There are around 28 rooms in total, split between the main house, a converted herb garden courtyard behind it and a pair of shepherd's huts, so the character varies considerably from room to room.
Main house rooms are the traditional option, several with views across the marshes towards the sea. The courtyard rooms are larger, quieter and more contemporary in feel, with their own doors onto the garden — these are the ones to ask for if you want space or are travelling with a dog. Decor throughout leans towards muted coastal colours rather than chintz, and bathrooms have been kept up to date.
Food is a large part of the appeal. The hotel runs a conservatory dining room and a more relaxed bar and terrace, with Brancaster mussels, local crab and North Sea fish appearing on the menu according to season. Non-residents book it regularly, which is a reasonable indication of quality.
The setting suits birdwatchers and walkers above all: RSPB Titchwell Marsh is a few minutes on foot and the Norfolk Coast Path runs behind the property, with Brancaster and Holkham beaches within a short drive. Couples make up the bulk of guests and the hotel works best as an adult-focused base, though families are accommodated. Rates rise steeply in summer and at weekends, so midweek stays in spring or autumn represent much better value.
