Choosing where to sleep in Norfolk matters more than in most counties, because the driving distances are longer than the map suggests. The A-roads are slow, the coast road through the north Norfolk villages is narrow, and what looks like a twenty-minute hop between Cromer and Brancaster is closer to fifty in August. Pick one area and work outwards from it rather than trying to cover the county from a single central base.

Couples and food-led trips are best served by the stretch between Brancaster and Wells — Burnham Market, Titchwell, Holkham and Burnham Deepdale. This is the most expensive corner of Norfolk and rooms in high summer regularly run past £200 a night, but it is also where the best kitchens are and where you can eat well without getting back in the car. Book six months ahead for August and for the weeks around Easter.

Families generally do better at Wells-next-the-Sea, Cromer or Sheringham. All three have a beach you can walk to, cheap food, amusements for wet afternoons and a broader spread of family rooms and self-catering. Cromer and Sheringham are on the Bittern Line from Norwich, which makes a car-free week genuinely workable.

Walkers and birdwatchers should base themselves along the coast path between Hunstanton and Cley, ideally at Brancaster, Titchwell or Blakeney, where the reserves are on the doorstep and pubs are used to muddy boots and early breakfasts. Broads visitors want Wroxham, Horning or Ludham instead, where prices are noticeably lower and boatyards are a walk away.

Norwich is the value option year-round. City-centre hotels are typically 30 to 40 per cent cheaper than equivalent coastal rooms, availability is far better at short notice, and you have a real choice of restaurants. The trade-off is a drive of 40 to 60 minutes to the coast each day. Out of season — November to March — the whole calculation shifts, coastal rates drop sharply and last-minute booking becomes realistic almost everywhere except Christmas and New Year.
