Camping in North Weston

2 campsites, glamping sites and caravan parks

North Weston is farmland, not campsite country, and there are no formal campsites in the hamlet itself, but the wider Thame and Haseley area of south Oxfordshire has a handful of small rural sites worth considering, along with glamping options in converted barns and shepherd's huts scattered across the surrounding villages. As with everywhere in England, wild camping without the landowner's permission is illegal, so stick to registered sites, farm campsites that welcome tents, or club-affiliated pitches, and always ask first if a farmer's field looks tempting.

The terrain around North Weston is gentle, low-lying vale land threaded by the River Thame, good for easy cycling and walking between hamlets but with some fields prone to becoming waterlogged after wet weather, so a raised or well-drained pitch matters more here than dramatic scenery. The Chiltern Hills rise a few miles to the south-east around Chinnor and Aston Rowant, offering firmer, hillier ground and some lovely wooded campsites if you don't mind a short drive, with the advantage of ready-made walking routes along the escarpment.

Late spring through early autumn is the sensible camping season here, when the meadows are dry underfoot and the long evenings suit a fire and a view over the Vale of Aylesbury. Midsummer weekends can get busy at the more established sites, so booking ahead is wise, while spring and September often bring quieter pitches and a good chance of clear skies for stargazing away from Oxford's light pollution. Glamping has become increasingly popular in this part of Oxfordshire, with several farms converting outbuildings or adding shepherd's huts and safari tents, giving a comfortable alternative for anyone who wants the rural setting without the full camping kit. Whichever option you choose, this is a landscape best enjoyed slowly, with short hops between Thame, Rycote and the Haseley villages rather than long treks, and plenty of good pubs within easy reach for evenings when cooking over a camp stove loses its appeal.
