The Black Swan occupies one whole side of Helmsley's market place, and its patchwork frontage — black-and-white timber, Elizabethan stone and a Georgian townhouse — reflects a building that has been added to for five centuries. Inside there are 57 rooms across the original inn and the newer wings, some looking out over the square, others over the walled garden at the back.

It is run as a large but relaxed inn rather than a formal hotel: dogs are welcome throughout, the bar serves all day, and the restaurant has held AA rosettes for cooking that sources heavily from within the national park. The tearoom on the ground floor is a Helmsley institution in its own right.

For visitors, the position is the selling point. Helmsley Castle, the Walled Garden and Duncombe Park are within a few hundred yards, the Cleveland Way begins at the market cross, and the shops, delis and Saturday market are on the doorstep. Rievaulx Abbey is ten minutes by car and Sutton Bank around twenty. Parking is available behind the hotel.
