The Pheasant Hotel
Harome, near Helmsley · Hotel
Village hotel by the duck pond at Harome with sixteen country-style rooms, an indoor pool and an ambitious kitchen.
About The Pheasant Hotel
Converted from a blacksmith's forge and a pair of cottages beside the mill pond, the Pheasant is the quieter of Harome's two well-known addresses and all the better for it. Sixteen rooms are decorated in an unfussy country style, with garden or pond views, and there are family rooms, four-posters, a duplex suite and a self-contained cottage for longer stays.
The kitchen, under chef-director Peter Neville, has collected awards steadily and keeps a serious tasting menu alongside more straightforward dishes in the bar. There is an indoor heated swimming pool, which is an unusual find in a village hotel of this size and a genuine asset with children or on a wet afternoon.
Harome sits in gentle farmland at the foot of the moors, with Helmsley three miles away and Rievaulx Abbey a little further. It suits guests who want good food and a slow pace rather than a town on the doorstep, and it is well placed for Nunnington Hall, Castle Howard and the drive north over Blakey Ridge. Dog-friendly rooms are available and parking is on site.
